THE LIBRARY SERIES
Books and paintings give us the freedom to fly, to imagine the previously unimaginable.
I recognize specific places, subjects and objects that consistently trigger my imagination
The library is one of those places, filled with infinite potential.
As a painter and collage artist perusing through stacks of books is as powerful as a late afternoon walk into the woods. It is there you are quietly reminded about one of your most important assets: your imagination. Mark Twain said “In a good bookroom you feel in some mysterious way that you are absorbing the wisdom contained in all the books through your skin, without even opening them.” The library is a potent place symbolically, visually and mentally. Rows of books, their titles, random colors , textures and shapes all lined up create their own natural beauty.
In THE LIBRARY SERIES I start by drawing horizontal lines on wood that refer to both the structure of bookshelves and often to the horizon line of a beach or lake. The collage, words and painting elements are like a melodic puzzle : made with cut up maps, fabric and postcards With the discussion that books are going to disappear into the electronic abyss in the next 10 years, I felt the need to honor the object and it’ s authors for so much mind bending pleasure and knowledge. Libraries are an essential and mystical part of our world. Thus far on going chapters in the series include : Summer Reading, Note Books, and Dream Keys.
