Americana = nostalgia, chance participation and everyday awareness
I remember an early Robert Rauschenberg and Jasper John's exhibition that incorporated everyday objects : a wood ladder, a measuring tape and broom.
From the corridor the broom looked painted but the broom was just a broom .
The clever and symbolic juxtaposition struck me as brilliant, and funny : all is possible in America
Everyday objects are often the catalyst . I collect things: sheet music, an old picket fence, a jar of wood buttons, old post cards, maps.
In 2011 The Library of Dreams II ,an interactive installation at The Cranes Building in Philadelphia invited people to hang up their keys.
People dug through their pockets and purses to find, reminisce and then donate keys they no longer needed .
At the close of the exhibition an unforeseen nostalgia of shadows and hundreds of keys remained.
