Nostalgia and everyday awareness
Long before I became an artist I remember going to a Robert Rauschenberg and Jasper John's painting exhibition that incorporated everyday objects : a wood ladder, a measuring tape, a quilt, a broom all labeled Combines . From the corridor the broom looked painted but on closer inspection the broom really was just an old broom.
The clever poetic and symbolic juxtaposition struck me as brilliant and funny and opened up a whole new world of artistic possibilities and felt very all American .
I never lost my fascination with incorporating everyday object into my work. They are often the catalyst. It makes the work very real. (Take a look at Laws Like Houses Lean On Each Other) So, I fill my artistic tool box with all sorts of things including keys, sheet music, old wall paper, buttons, wood sticks, old post cards, credit cards and maps. Flea markets are the magic art supply store, they ignite the creative process.
